masses of patch e mails??

Hi could anyone explain why my email account as above is
currently receiving over 50 emails a week from different
sections of Microsoft trying to get me to download
security patch's. looks dodgy with senders like "Microsoft
Corporation Security Assistance"
" and "Security
Division" "

is this a clever way of getting me to download a
virus/worm/spyware or wat?
