View Full Version : !!!BOOTVIS EATS UP MY DRIVE!!!

Comp Guy
December 18th 03, 06:20 PM
I told bootvis to trace. After my computer restarted, nothing happened. I
decided to get rid of bootvis, so I tried to uninstalled it.
The uninstall messed up, and wouldn't work again, so I went through,
deleting as many bootvis files and registry entries as possible.
Now, a file called trace.log in the c:\windows\system32\logfiles\wmi is
there and I can't delete it. It grows at about 1 mb a second. When I try
to delete it, it tells me that it is in use. So I boot to safe mode, but I
still get the same error when I try to delete it.

"deleting as many bootvis files and registry entries as possible", now

Well how else am I supposed to get rid of a program that won't uninstall by
itself?

I hope not everyone in this NG is a rude as you. Do you just waste your

Did you even bother to read the white (instructions) paper that is on =

I think that you have somehow turned on a trace file in =
W(indows)M(anagement)I(nstrumentation). Administration tools.

Bootvis only runs when you tell it to. It is a tool for developers to =
view driver load times. XP does what Bootvis does on its own every 3 =

A minute reading ahead of time would have avoided this problem for you. =
When you asked Bootvis to trace boot time, it will continue to do that =
until you go back and run it again to view the results. At that point =
you can disable logging and delete the log file.

To all who replied, I wasn't asking how I screwed up, I was asking how to
fix it.
If your going to tell me that I messed up, at least say how to fix it.

It appears that there is a problem with Bootvis under certain circumstances
and it also implies that they may sort you out for free.

Although I do have a P4 computer, I do not have hyperthreading. As well
this article deals with a trace file that is corrupt. Mine just grows and
grows, and I haven't been able to delete it. Even if I deny "everyone"
access to the file and folder, it still keeps growing.
Any other ideas?

PMSL, I did you read the other posts?
I asked for help.
He tells me that I don't deserve help, and I should just wipe my drive.
Then I got angry and said, "Ok, so are you just going to be a jerk, or are
you going to help?
If the former, then go get a life.
If the later, thank you."

So how am I giving all this attitude?

How was a arrogant?
And yes, maybe saying that someone is a jerk is rude, but why would I call
them a jerk in the first place? (Rhetorical question)

I don't have HT, and the Trace file isn't corrupt or damaged, it just grows

You weren't that constructive towards the problem either. Have a look at my

Hmm... So you're rude to people who reply to your postings (OK, they were
less than polite themselves ), but then you ask people to be polite in your
sig? That's makes a LOT of sense.... Really, if you want help then you do
need to calm down somewhat... If people are less than helpfull, just ignore
their posts instead of starting a flame war.

Now, as to your problem. If you manually uninstalled BootVis whilst it was
still logging, then that explains why the log is still building itself, even
though it appears BootVis is not there anymore. It also explains why you
are unable to reinstall it as the files it's trying to overwrite are
currently in use. Your best bet is to look in the Services applet (control
panel -> administrative tools -> services) and see if there is a logging
service running, or any services to do with BootVis. Stop them and then see
if the logfile will delete. You should then try reinstalling BootVis,
disable ALL tracing options, and then uninstall it.

If none of that works, try a system restore back to before you first
installed BootVis which should solve the problem for you. If neither of
these work, then you may be forced to do a reinstall. Unfortunately, (and
I'm NOT being rude here), this can be the price you pay for using tools like
these without reading the documentation carefully. BootVis is not intended
for anyone who is unsure what they're doing...

You are not only rude, a breaker of USNET convention with all of this
cross-posting you are also way too impatient.

You were way too impatient when failing to give BootVis an oportunity to
finish its trace - look at the HD LED if you don't think it's working! You
were impatient with the un-install - would assume BootVis was still at work
tracing when you tried to remove it. You were extremely impatient when you
cludged your registry and now you are extremely impatient... and hostile
because people are pointing this out (hopefully to help you to prevent doing
the same error again) and can't provide a "magical" cure to your
self-induced dilema!

Even if there were those who told you to go into recovery console, run
attrib if necessary and delete the file from there (under quasi-DOS so it
wouldn't be in use) you would still gripe because it's to difficult, you
don't know DOS test commands or you don't have an XP CD!!

Some people just want to gripe! You won't be wasting my bandwidth any
further as I'm giving you the *PLUNK* that you so richly deserve!

Bye...
Len

I downloaded it from another site, which didn't have instructions on it.
And Bootvis' help isn't exactly helpful :o).

Did you even bother to read the white (instructions) paper that is on the
same page as the download was?

I think that you have somehow turned on a trace file in
W(indows)M(anagement)I(nstrumentation). Administration tools.

Bootvis only runs when you tell it to. It is a tool for developers to view
driver load times. XP does what Bootvis does on its own every 3 days.

exactly helpful.

A minute reading ahead of time would have avoided this problem for you.
When you asked Bootvis to trace boot time, it will continue to do that until
you go back and run it again to view the results. At that point you can
disable logging and delete the log file.

Thanks for that usefull pointer, I tried it, with no success. I'm going to
try Len's advice and use the recovery console.

Because BV ate up so much space, SR erased my restore points :(

Thank you for that polite advice. However, the site I downloaded it from,
had no instructions or warnings. :(

I'll let you know if Len's advice works.

Restart Bootvis and use its menus to turn off tracing. Restart. Then delete

I have a fiew things for you to try
1, look in the services witch can be found in control panel , administrative tools, computer manegment , services and aplications, and check for any bootvis services and stop them
then try an delete the file, if this dosent work
if your hdd is fat 32 boot to a fat 32 boot disk (i.e Win98 boot disk) and delete the file
if ntfs you will have to find a NTFS boot disk, witch will give you dos style access to the ntfs disk and try and delete it
one deleted try and reinstalling bootvis, then diable it then try and uninstall it

Hope this helps

You seem to be the only one who has ever had this problem. I suspect
whatever you deleted from the registry has screwed things up so badly only a
reinstall of the OS will fix it. Bootvis is not installed nor uninstalled it
is an executable file that is run or not run. To remove it simply delete it.
In your case since you fooled with the registry without really knowing what
you are doing reformat and reinstall is your ONLY solution.

I couldn't find the directory tree in the registry that you specified.

I'm not sure if this will really help or not, but after reading all the
posts it seems as if you haven't found a working solution yet,...

Two possibilities worth trying involve applying the freeware programs
"RegCleaner v4.3" by Jouni Vuorio, and the "Xteq Systems" utility. If
there's a registry entry without a program it links to, there's a good
chance that the RegCleaner program will discover the fact and delete the
entry (when in full auto cleaning mode). Of course, it might not have that
capability, if the item the entry links to is running. But, if it's running,
then the file can't be gone, can it? Which would mean RegCleaner wouldn't
find a faulty key,... So, I guess that won't work.

The Xteq Systems utility is a power-tweaking thing. It's essentially a
collection of applets that are accessed via a GUI list of descriptions.
There's a section called "Startup/Shutdown". Within that section, there will
be a couple of subsections for type of OS. Picking the OS that applies to
you, you should find a further subdivision called "Autorun"; there's a part
one for the system in general, and a part two for the current user. Check
the contents shown in the window to the right when you click on the Autorun
programs item. You might find your Bootvis listed there. If it is, then
disable it via the buttom below the window. Exit & reboot. That might (?)
prevent it from being activated & put into use - and, give you the chance to
do something different than what's been tried before.

A few other thoughts,...

a) Have you tried (recently) using the "Find" utility, for any file of any
type, having the text "bootivs" in the name?
b) Perhaps if you track down a way of contacting them, and approach them
just right, the people who made the "bootvis" application would give you a
list of all registry keys & values, & files installed during the
installation process?
c) Task Manager can give you a list of all running process, and you can end
ANY running process from there. So, if it's in use, make it not in use -
and, then you've got different options to pick from.

Side note ... lessons learned ...

Bootvis cut my boot time by four seconds. Whooee!

That's not even worth the time that I spent downloading the bootvis package.

And considering the hassles that Comp Guy is experiencing, the conclusion
can only be ... just don't do it.

(Maybe that's why Microsoft removed it from their web site?)
