I just installed Norton Internet Security on my PC, now
when I go to shut down my computer of just log off it
takes about 3-5 minutes. Is there anything I can do to
speed it back up to normal? Thanks

Uninstall NIS. Seriously - it's garbage - there are many better AV and
firewall packages out there.

Norton's Internet Security is an excellent set of anti-virus tools. I have
it. Trust me, it is not the cause of your problem.

Greetings --
Utter rubbish. I've been using Norton products successfully for
years, and never experienced any such problems. Norton Internet
Security is a particularly useful set of tools.

Some additional causes of slow Win XP shutdown are given in the "Shutdown is
Slow" section of

Jim,
I'm not the one having the problem but that is one heck of a resource site.
Thanks, that one is a keeper.

Actually, Bruce, it isn't. NIS causes all sorts of issues with MS Office
(particularly Publisher) and I speak from good experience (being a Publisher
user since day one). If you want futher verification, then do a Google
search on the Publisher group (microsoft.public.publisher) for 'out of
memory' or 'cannot open files from a different version' 'cannot edit story
in Word' errors - all caused by NIS - in particular, NAV. There are even KB
articles on the topic - here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;243237 for example
is one about disabling the Office plugin so you can edit a story in Word.
This is all well and good, but then, if you use Outlook for mail, you lose
the ability to scan incoming and outgoing post.
Here's another article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810041 - error
message Publisher Cannot Open the File.
All these errors apply to NAV *ONLY*. No other AVP causes these problems.

Perdita,
Good response and you are partially correct. The real problem is
script-blocking, used to prevent malicious scripts from doing nasty's to our
systems. This feature can be disabled and the Symantec link you referenced
shows you how to do it.
So, saying that Symantec's software caused the problem - yes, but did it
because the option was set to do exactly that - block all scripts. The user
has the option of disabling the script-blocking function in the Symantec
software.
I've had my share of problems with Symantec's "Get it out the door, fix it
later" attitude but they're also pretty good some times too and one has to
balance the good against the not so good. Geeeeesssshhh......even Microsoft
makes a mistake once in awhile...
