View Full Version : Control Panel Views

My Control Panel is only available in Windows Classic
View. I'd like to be able to choose between Category view
and Classic view. I suspect that there's a value somewhere
in the Registry (probably in HKEY_CURRENT_USER) that needs
to be changed. I find that if I go to the following
location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion
\Policies\Explorer
and change the value of ForceClassicControlPanel from 1 to
0, I can get the Category view but I lose the Classic
view. Ideas anyone?

You should not have to be messing in the registry for this !
In 'Control Panel', what does the first-pane in the left-hand panel say ?

Try Folder Options> General and check Show Task Pane. Then open Control
Panel. Should now see the blue column with the Category View choice on the
left.

I was expecting thiere to be another pane, I believe that 'Sharon F' in post
below has the answer to get the required pane back.

Do you not have the words 'Control Panel' in the left-pane, if you do,
thiere should be a double-arrow thing pointing down (if so click-it).
Sorry if I'm of beam, but am hopeing to solve the problem.

No. I don't have "control panel" in the left-hand pane.
I do find, by the way, that if I create a new use and log
on as the new user that everything is normal. That's one
of the reasons I suspect there is something screwy in the
registry whem I'm the current user.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help. As a last resort, I may
try prayer.

khrob, sorry it took a bit to get back to you. The exact wording in Folder
Options on the General page is "Show Common Tasks in Folders." This refers
to that blue column that will show up in folder windows that is also known
as the "task pane." If you are using "Windows Classic" as your display
style, the column for the task pane still appears but it may not show in
that new "xp blue" color.

When the task pane is present in the Control Panel window, it offers a link
that behaves as a quick toggle between Classic and Category view.

Thanks for trying to help. I'd visited the folder options
page before and selected "Show common tasks ..." but still
I don't get the choice of view on the left-hand pane of
the control panel. I continue to suspect some sort of
anomaly in the registry. I should mention if I create a
new user and log on as such the control panel choices are
as one would expect in XP.
