View Full Version : MSN Msnger and Messenger Conflicts

Using XP Pro SP1 all patched up todate. I had at one point in past
installed MSN Messenger 5, and then uninstalled it, and realized the MSN
version is what is required to actually share/do things utilizing UPnP.

Problem now is the two programs are fighting each other, they keep
alternating between logging and logging off. I am continaully getting the
pop up mesages sayin to effect your login has changed etc.. Never had this
before.

How do I get things to behave again?

-- I did sign up for the beta MSN - I hope the beta will toss out 4.7 and
not need 2 different Messengers - what a pain this is!

Greetings,

If you're using the latest version of Windows Messenger (4.7.2005), it will automatically try
to connect, even with MSN Messenger 5 installed (this was changed in .2005).

As a fix, you can stop Windows Messenger 4.x from loading at boot-up time (assuming you're
using MSN Messenger 5 exclusively) -- just open it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab
and uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts'. As well, if you're an Outlook Express
user, run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

or, you could just remove the automatic login -- click the Start Button, then click the
Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select your account name,
and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network
Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click
'Remove'. Of course you'll then have to type your login and password everytime you attempt
to sign in.

Hi,

The Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry is the automatic login -- if you remove that one, then
you have to enter your login/password when you want to login.

ok cool got that one.. Any ideas how to make the 2 behave? It saying you
been logged out because you logged in at another location. So I sort of
watch the 2 taking turns logging in and logging out back and forth LOL.

Hi,

If you remove the automatic login they'll behave (because they'll both need to have you type
in a login/password to sign in). In 4.7.0106, the automatic login in Windows Messenger was
disabled, so that MSN Messenger 5 would get the "right" to login automatically and Windows
Messenger wouldn't conflict, but this is removed in 4.7.2005.
