View Full Version : Messenger keeps shutting off

Its driving me nuts, have ran updates and still having problems. Messenger
lets me log on and after 5 mins or so when I go to send an IM, tells me I'm
not logged on and I can log on again.
Win xp, DSL, no firewall. I've seen posts about others with the same
problem but can't seem to find any answers. Anyone have a suggestion?

Greetings Ed,
Here are some suggestions that might help:
If you're using a third-party firewall (Sygate, ZoneAlarm, Norton, etc.) try uninstalling
them or set Messenger to "Permit All" or "Allow" type options in the firewall configuration.
If you're using a router, make sure you have the latest firmware from your router
manufacturer. As well, you might try setting your computers local IP into the routers DMZ
setting (see documentation on how to do this).
If you see the disconnection problem on a corporate network, the network may be timing out
your settings -- in this case, you might want to ask your system administrator to adjust the
corporate internet sharing solution/firewall (if possible).
Finally, this can also happen due to a lack of bandwidth. If you have Kazaa, WinMX, GNUtella
or some other file sharing-type application or something else that takes considerable amounts
of bandwidth, you may want to shut it down and see if that helps the situation (even if
you're using a high speed connection, these applications can use most of the resources of
your connection).

This is the same problem which I am having. Also xp, dsl
and no firewall. Uninstalling Norton 2002 has not
helped. I'm not exactly sure what a router does/is but I
don't think I'm using one. I'm not on a corporate
network, just me at home on a direct dsl connection to my
laptop. Also disconnected Kazaa to no avail. Any further
ideas? Thanks in advance

I am in exactly the same position guys. Win XP pro,
firewall and router config appear OK (other users in my
department with no problems) and no Kazaa / winmx.
Could it just be a coincidence that Windows Update
uploaded some Windows Messenger 4.7 update and .Net
Framework 1.1 just before this started happening?

Thanks for mentioning the add-ins, Grant. I took a
messenger add-in out of "add/remove programs" in control
panel and MSN messenger 5 now appears to be working
properly. Good luck
