How do you complete remove messenger form WindowsXP pro.
I have clicked option to NOT start it when windows
starts, and I have gone to Outlook Express and said I do
NOT want it to start when Outlook Express starts. I just
want to get rid of it ALTOGETHER. Everytime it starts,
McAfee warns me that a program is trying to reach the
internet.

I cannot find how to remove it in the control panel
add/remove programs.

Thanks

Greetings,

First run this:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

Then, close down Windows Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in the
notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run
and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK. Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and
screenshots, go to,

In trying to remove Windows Messenger I copied and pasted
the command you listed but I get a Advanced INF Install
window that states "Error in unregistering the OCX
16422." Any suggestion? Thanks.

Hi Dennis,

In most cases, Messenger is probably gone (look in \Program Files\Messenger on your drive).
If it's not, you may be running Norton Antivirus 2003 -- if you are, Norton added a new
"instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with
Messenger and display this behavior when trying to remove it. To stop it, open Norton
Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by
the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then
uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

If you're not running Norton Antivirus 2003 and Messenger still is installed, make sure its
process isn't running, start the Task Manager (right-click on an empty area of the taskbar
and click Task Manager or press Ctrl-Alt-Del), choose the Processes tab, click "msmsgs.exe"
and then choose 'End Process'.
