Mike,

MSN Messenger (Windows Messenger) was originally designed as a global
chat room, where folks who had never met could communicate with each
other. Your Profile identifies you with others, like you, who
genuinely desire to communicate with you. Thus MM (WM) is set by
default to allow anybody you don't know to send you messages.

To turn this off, go to your Messenger window, select Tools - Options
- Privacy. Select "All other users" under "My Allow List", hit the
Block button to move "All other users" under "My Block List"..

This solution, unfortunately, prevents anybody who genuinely desires
to communicate with you, as well as spammers, from talking to you.

If you note the userid (you can Copy it to the clipboard) used by the
spammer (you should see the alias AND the userid after To:), you can
Paste it into a reply to this message. Jonathan wil report it for us.

Spam sucks - Get rid of the spam to email me

Edward Apostol Ryerson
April 16th 03, 12:53 AM
Hi folks -

I am getting the same messages from the same "names"

note that the hotmail accounts listed seemed to be random letters.
This suggests that a program has been made to generate random hotmail
accounts (at this point it becomes unclear) interface to create them
as accounts, and then send out messages through the MSN Messenger
service.

Disabling the "Messenger Service" I believe has little relation to the
spam that you and I are getting, since that service is related to the
classic NT messaging system used by admins to post notices etc to
users on a network.

I am aware that developers seen at sourceforge.net are creating
message "clients" that are similar to MSN, that also work with yahoo,
ICQ, Netscape Messenger etc. So the theory goes if someone can create
the client, someone must also know (through reverse engineering) how
to send messages across the MSN Messenger system.

I also recall that at one point Microsoft themselves released a
version of MSN Messenger that ran within a web page itself - called
the MSN Messenger active X control. I can no longer find it on
Microsoft's web site, but someone can easily have used that to learn
fundamentally how the MSN Messenger system works through dissecting
the control, and then use it to spam people.

I don't know a specific solution to this problem, but the above
information is what I can surmise. Perhaps any of the Microsoft MVPs
or Microsoft SERFers looking around here know a solution.

On a final note, also be aware of sites that post programs that
supposedly "stop" MSN Messenger spam - I encountered one through the
google search engines, downloaded the product, but before installation
I decided to read the readme - it essentially read something like this
-

"go to your task bar, find the MSN Messenger icon and choose sign
out".

Now why would you send a program with instructions that basically tell
you to disconnect from Messenger? I did not install the program
subsequently, but until I hear from legitimate vendors who claim they
can stop the SPAM problem through MSN Messenger, I will simply have to
limit the usage of MSN Messenger and only allow users who I have known
contacts with to reach me.

Any thoughts on this are appreciated.

cheers
