I just installed XP. I don't have a messenger icon in
the status area.

Are you trying to turn off the service that is popping up
"Messenger Service" windows? If so, click Start, then Run,
enter "services.msc" and click OK. Scroll down to
"Messenger", select it, right-click and then choose
Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped,
click OK. Nothing in Windows or any third-party
application should be effected by this.

If Messenger isn't part of Windows, what the devil is it?

Hi,

I didn't say it wasn't part of Windows, I said nothing in Windows would be effected by
turning off this service.
