Greetings Bill,

If you're just trying to disable Messenger remove the "Messenger Service" popups, do the
following: click Start, then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to
"Messenger", select it, right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose
'Disabled' and then choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK.
Nothing in Windows or any real third-party applications should be effected by this.

To actually disable Windows Messenger, the easiest way is just to uninstall it (you can
reinstall it whenever you'd like), to do so:
close down Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the notification area/system tray and
click close). Then click the start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you
like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK. Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and
