Hello, I am searching the database for an answer right
now, but I thought I would post in case anyone was on
currently. I am trying to get my resume out for a job
deadline and after I finished it yesterday, my computer
won't boot today! It was giving me a system error and I
took it into Best Buy to get the information off, but
they can't get around the admin encryption. There are two
logons on my drive, mine and my girlfriends. We are both
listed as administrators. When they attach my drive as a
secondary drive to the one at BB, they show they have
ownership and they can access all the information from
her logon, but mine constantly comes up access denied. I
don't need to save anything from her side!!! She has her
own computer! Anyways, if anyone could tell me how to get
at my documents, I would appreciate it. I have until noon
tomorrow to get this info out. Thanks. CG.

If you encrypted the files, and you didn't back up the encryption keys, then
the data is gone.

How would I have gone about doing that? I am new to XP
and did not do it purposefully. Also, would I have to
have specifically backed the encryption up?

Open Help and Support and enter Encryption in the search box. See the entry
for Back up default recovery keys to a floppy disk.

Why did you say encryption ?
Do you know for a fact that you did use EFS encryption
(assuming this is Windows XP Pro, as Home edition is
not able to do EFS encryption)
It sounds as though they need to set permissions on the
files, assuming they really have already taken ownership.
Have them look in the properties of the folder that is at
the root of your profile, to see that Administrators are
listed as the Owner, and to see that Administrators are
granted permissions. Do not bother doing this on any
other folder higher up.
