viewing secure sites ?

if this sounds like a novice question your right ,my xp
works great execpt it will not allow me to go to secure
sites ...(like sign up sheets and such)...i cant even use
windows update ....it scans and tells me i dont need
updates ....that cant be right ...anyway ...help
