My Desktop has two of everything (with identical names),
if I delete one file just an emty shell remains on the
Desktop and I cannot remove/move/rename it. System Restore
is unable to restore to any of the earlier versions...
My original problem was that My Documents on the Desktop
was not being accessed whilst My Documents next to the
Desktop icon (as viewed with Windows Explorer) was
responding correctly. When I tried to repair the problem,
I got into a tangle...
Even though the system looks chaotic, I can still access
Internet, which has been so far my only activity, and in
all other ways the system seems to be working normally.
I have backed up on Diskettes the small volume of
documents which I do not wish to lose...
I would be very pleased to receive some assistance ...

The desktop is composed of two folders, a personal and a shared. You've set both to the same folder. So it goes and get the contents of that folder twice.

I've attached a file that lists your desktop paths. If both point to the same folder then you'll get the double effect. The fix depends on which folder it is. Now it's off to get control of my desktop back that I've duplicated your problem.

These two must be identical paths but use different syntax
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
EG C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop style
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
EG %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop style

These two also must be identical and by default use the different styles.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\UserShell Folders
