View Full Version : removing and reinstalling messenger 4.7

I have been watching the posts recently. My messenger
disappeared on me (click shortcut and nothing happens) I
follwed instructions on how to remove "RunDll32
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" then cleaned up upon reboot.
I went to download site and tried to reinstall. Same
result! I have winxp pro sp1 and also have disabled the
protection in NAV2003. The only way to get messenger back
was to install msn messenger 5. Could there be something
in my registry to prevent messenger 4.7 from ever
starting again?

Greetings,
If at all possible, you might try just using System Restore to restore your PC back when
Windows Messenger was working properly. To do so, click Start, then Help & Support, then
"Undo changes to my computer using System Restore" and go through the wizard.
If you can't System Restore back, check out this knowledge base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302089
Go through the applicable steps, except when choosing 'Do not allow Windows Messenger to
run', be sure it's set to Disabled. If you're using the registry method (the last method
listed on the page), instead of setting a 'PreventRun' DWORD, delete it (as above with the
Hide Messenger DWORD). If the PreventRun key isn't there, then this isn't the problem.

Once I found the registry string the article mentions I
found it full of stuff preventing it from starting or
updating! I deleted those strings reinstalled messenger
and I was good to go! Thanks for the help!
