View Full Version : MSN Msngr 5, Windows Msngr 4.7..What's up with that???

OK, I am totally confused. Some time ago, I guess, XP Pro's Windowsupdate
prompted me to upgrade to MSN Messenger 5.0. Dut to the later version, I
fugured ok and did it. Now Windowsupdate wants to install Windows Messenger
4.7, an earlier version number and different name. I don't get it! Which is
the newer version of what, and what's the difference? What should we be
using with XP?

Greetings,
There are two different Messenger clients available on Windows XP -- Windows Messenger
(currently at 4.7) and MSN Messenger 5. Since you already have MSN Messenger 5 (and most
likely are using that), you can ignore WindowsUpdate's recommendation.

Hi Jonathan,
Do you mean that MSN-Messenger finally took over from Windows Messenger.
And that the latter is going to disappear ?

Hi,
No, I'm not saying that at all (and that would be incorrect, Windows Messenger and MSN
Messenger are separate applications, neither is being "taken over" by the other) -- I'm
simply saying that in the poster's situation, that continuing to use MSN Messenger 5 and not
bothering with the Windows Messenger update would probably be the easiest and most sensible
thing to do. If it's not broke, don't fix it =).

Hi Jonathan,
This is sound advice, except for the functionality differences (which
you wrote about, and I can't find) between MSN Messenger and Windows
Messenger. If he doesn't pick up the WM update, won't he be missing
functionality?

Hi Chuck,
No -- they already have Windows Messenger installed, WindowsUpdate is just informing the
poster that 4.7.2009 is now available. There is no new functionality with 4.7.2009.

Hi Jonathan,
Yeah I remember V4.7.2009. It didn't break anything - but didn't fix
anything either. I spent all that time asking you how I could get a
fallback copy of what I had before, then downloading what you sent me,
THEN updating WM. TFWOT.
Cheers,
Chuck

I experienced the same thing, and arrived at the same
conclusion, however it gets a little more complex. I
tried to do a remote assistance through MSN Messenger,
first as expert, and then as novice, and I get a message
telling me that I have to install the latest version of
MSN Messenger to do a RA. I downloaded and installed the
exact same version that I was getting this message on, v5.0
(5.0.0543). At some point I got an error message saying
that a file path was not valid. I don't remember exactly
what the path was, except that it was directed to my Temp
folder. What's next, a repair installation of XP?

MICROSOFT needs to fix this as they are not distinguishing between XP users
an MSN user using XP. This aggravated me for sometime, I don't use MSN ISP
so I removed MSN Messenger from the control panel add remove programs
section. This will allow XP, OE, IE, Office, to use messenger as intended.
If you use MSN ISP then go to add/remove windows components and uncheck the
windows messenger box. Your MSN services will utilize the MSN messenger
program as intended.

Windows Messenger - MSN Messenger - Whatever the names are:
MS should be ashamed to confuse the customer and to sow dicord the way they
do with a nice litlle software that should be EASY for everybody.
There should be ONE version for everybody.
Messenger should also take care about opening the ports it needs.
Messenger should also do by itself what should be done in order to get
through the built-in XP firewall.
We did chose for a WindowsXP system because it was supposed to be
USER-FRIENDLY : up to MS to prove to us that we made the right choise !!
I banned Windows Messenger already for quite some time due to all these
confusions, incompatibilities between WinXP, ME, 98, 2K, problems with the
WinXP firewall, and because of the fact that I cannot login in the
appear-offline-status.
I am using Yahoo Messenger.
Maybe not as good as Windows Messenger.
But su much more USERFRIENDLY.

Greetings Jack,
In order to use Remote Assistance in MSN Messenger, you have to have the latest version of
Windows Messenger installed, not MSN Messenger.
To do so, just download and install from here:
http://messenger.microsoft.com/download/download.asp?client=0.
