View Full Version : Associating different file extensions with Word
Ian
April 17th 03, 08:59 PM
I have a new computer with XP home on it. For years I have
used files with extension .LET for letters. I taught Word
to open these files as well as .DOC files and some others,
by selecting "Opens with..." "always use for this file
type". When I try this with XP, Word does not appear on
the list of programs. I can go into the browse mode and
find ProgramFiles/MicrosoftOffice/Office/winword.exe, but
nothing happens. How can I get Word added to the list of
programs? Excel and other programs are there. If I try to
change the association for .DOC files, Word appears as a
recommended type, but is missing for new extensions.

Do you have Word installed (if not, installit)? If you do, try repairing =
it thru its tools features or from the "Add/Remove Programs" feature in =
the Control Panel (When you try to remove it, it will prompt you, as an =
option, for a repair. You may have to uninstall it and then reinstall =
Word.
By the way, you don't teach Word to associate to the .doc extension, as =
that is the extension format for Word. If you're having to open an app =
with the .doc extension by using the "open with" command referring that =
to the Word application, then something is wrong with your registry more =
than likely.

Thanks for two responses to this.
I have done what "Unknown" suggested. Word is not listed
as a possible program to associate. I also went into the
Browse for a program and clicked on WINWORD.EXE, but it
does get added to the list or become the program to use
for files with that name extension.
I have done what Jon suggested, uninstalled and
reinstalled Word, in fact I did the whole Office group of
programs. To confirm, I did not have to "teach" Word to
open the default .DOC files. That function was already
working OK.
I can also start word and open .LET file in the File|Open
Menu. I think the registry may be broken, but how to fix
it??? The problem is Word does not appear among the list
of available programs and cannot be added using the Browse
function.

Did you try folder options in control panel--file types--new and create the
association?

Hi,
When you say teach Word to DOC, that is what Word opens, so there is no =
teaching, as your first post indicated you taught Word to do. Anyway, =
Have you tried opening a notepad file, or another file that you have, =
and tried to use the "open with" feature and see if Word is listed in it =
then?

Go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types and click the New button. On the
dialog that opens up, Enter LTR and click the Advanced button. Use the pull
down list and scroll down to Microsoft Word Document.
