Can someone explain me the difference between MSN Messenger and Windows
Messenger?

Greetings,
MSN Messenger 5 and Windows Messenger are separate Messenger clients, both made by different
product teams at Microsoft. Windows Messenger is the built-in Messenger client that comes
with Windows XP, whereas MSN Messenger 5 you currently have to download separately. MSN
Messenger 5 has a few new features, like UPnP enabled file transfer, a newer user interface,
some new group and connectivity options and a few other changes.
However, although you can use MSN Messenger 5 exclusively, you still must have Windows
Messenger installed (but not necessarily running) for all the features (Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard, Application Sharing, etc.) to work. MSN Messenger 5 is not an upgrade to Windows
Messenger.

Thanks for information. I still use Windows Messenger 4.7 and have never
tried MSN Messenger. I'm however still confused. Why doesn't MS just make a
single fully customizable version (by the user) of Messenger instead of
having 2 version of it. I found "weird" having basically two same programs,
and as you told me I need Windows Messenger to use MSN Messenger.
Can you tell me if Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger can share (same)
contacts and can I run both of them at the same time. Are Windows Messenger
and MSN Messenger compatible: Can I use MSN Messenger to chat to person
which has installed only Windows Messenger or vice versa?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi,
They actually were the same application until just recently (with the release of MSN
Messenger 5 and Windows Messenger 4.7).
You can run both at the same time, but they don't share the same contacts -- for example, you
can have signed into Windows Messenger and signed into
MSN Messenger 5 (or vice-versa), but you can't have signed in to both (at
the same time).

Please could you tell me why windows mmessenger will not
allow me to update on the add-in website.
It gives me an error message that the file is not a win
32 application after down;oading the file.
No one has been able to help with this thus far

Hi Lynton,
This is usually the result of either a virus on your PC, or even some connection setting. If
you'd like, I'd be happy to e-mail you a copy if you continue to have problems downloading
it.
