have a Canon flatbed scanner and a Minolta film scanner. Both are
connected through a powered USB Hub.

The PC seems to loose the scanner and when I check the hub the light for the
PC connection is on but the 4 ports are off. If I dig it out , disconnect
the cable to the PC then reconnect, the lights turn on and the scanners work
fine. For a while, then the PC looses the scanners again. A few times I
had to disconnect and re-connect the power to the hub. The hub is buried in
the back of an office armoire and a pain in the neck to get to. Any
suggestions? None of this occurred with Windows 98.

It's likely that you need a line conditioner. (or a more stable 110 power
source)
