View Full Version : Trouble receiving a file

I've tried to get four different friends to send me a file over WINDOWS
MESSENGER (4.7). No luck.
I'm aware that sending files can be problematic, but is this problem likely
to be at my end or their's?
Also, I've heard tell MSN Messenger using UPNP for file transfer. Is this
client interchangeable with other users using Windows Messenger.

Just found another similar thread.
So receiving problems are unanimously the senders fault....short of having a
firewall running?

Greetings Evan,
This is correct -- although some third-party firewalls will block outgoing traffic (that is,
you trying to connect to your contact to "receive" the file), the built-in Windows XP
firewall however, does not block outgoing traffic.
More then likely your contact either has a firewall (including the built-in Windows XP
Internet Connection Firewall) that's blocking the incoming connections, or they're behind
some sort of NAT device, either a router, NAT'd internet connection, or some sort of Internet
Sharing software.

So please elaborate with more info here, some of these
hardware terms you used there aren't familiar to me. I
have a friend with a xp home edition machine that I built
for him and then my machine with xp professional on it I
can't send him a file and he can't send me a file. I have
mindspring dsl in central west florida, he has bell south
dsl in south east florida. Could there be anything
causing this that has to do with the fact that the
connection is dsl? I can't send files with icq, yahoo,
aim, or ms, no go. All of the systems I've tried to send
to have norton firewall running and we've all tried to
shut it down to see if that was causing an issue too.
These are not big files we're talking about. Sometimes
when I try to send files from icq I get the
message "unable to establish peer to peer connection" or
something to that effect. Please help with this.
