Hello,
I know this has been a problem for a while, but has the trouble with having
MSN Messenger 5 and the latest Windows Messenger on a WindowsXP computer
been resolved? My machine still wants to swap from one to the other when I
only want MSN Messenger 5 installed and running.
How can I stop Windows Messenger from running and logging on?
Hope someone can help?
Kol.

Greetings Kol,
You can just disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by opening it up, click Tools, Options,
Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when Windows starts'. This won't stop it
from being loaded by some other application though. As well, you can disable it further by
going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the
left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list and click Next >. Note: this is only
available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it
stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 5 to work properly.
As well, to stop it from loading with Outlook Express, download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
Then, if you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed, Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can automatically load Windows Messenger.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Hi there,
That's great, thank you very much.
If I had to have both the messengers running at the same time, is there
anyway of signing on with Windows Messenger with one Passport user and with
MSN Messenger with a different user?

Hi Kol,
Yes you can -- however, if you've saved your Passport information in your Windows XP account,
both clients will try to sign in to that account (if you're using previous versions of
Windows Messenger 4.7 *before* 4.7.2005 or 4.7.2009, Windows Messenger will actually not
automatically sign in if MSN Messenger 5 is installed). If both clients are trying to sign
in, just right-click the icon of the one you don't want to sign in under that account and
choose 'Cancel Sign in', then right click it again and choose 'Sign In', you'll be able to
type in the login & password you want.

Hi again,
Thank you for your reply.
I've set up both messengers to log into different users, but when I turned
on my machine again, they are both trying to connect with the same user
again.
Is there no way of making this permanent?

Hi Kol,
Well, there is a little "trick" you can use -- if you put one of the Messenger clients into
compatibility mode (note: you will loose built-in Messenger video capabilities in whichever
client you choose to do this in), it will ignore the XP saved password, and you can even save
your 2nd Passport and have it automatically login. To do this:
For Windows Messenger 4.x (the built-in Messenger client in XP):
Close down messenger (right-click icon in the notification area/system tray and click Exit),
then click Start, point to All Programs and right-click the Windows Messenger shortcut and
click Properties. Then, click the compatibility tab, and check the box next to 'Run this
program in compatibility mode for' and choose Windows 2000. Click OK, and then go into the
start menu/all programs again, and click the Windows Messenger shortcut you just modified.
For MSN Messenger 5,
Close down MSN Messenger (right-click icon in the notification area/system tray and click
Exit), then click Start, click Run, enter "%programfiles%\msn messenger" and click OK. Then,
right-click "msnmsgr" and click Properties. Then, click the compatibility tab, and check the
box next to 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' and choose Windows 2000. Click OK,
and then go to Start, All Programs, and MSN Messenger 5.0 to restart it.
After you've restarted whatever Messenger client you set to compatibility mode, you can then
login to that client (and save the password if you like).

Hi again,
I've just quickly tried this with Windows Messenger and now it loads up as
MSN Messenger 4.7. I'll take another look tomorrow morning.
Thanks again for the info.
