Clifford;
It still sounds like the hard drive.
Reseat the IDE cables at both ends.
chkdsk /f goes OK?
No unusual sounds from the hard drive, even occasionally?

Are all fans operating?
Sometimes video cards and CPUs also have fans.
Check to make sure vents are clear and no excessive dust in the case.

Run Maxtor's diagnostic again.

If it is not hardware, it is software.
Try a Repair Installation:

Thanks Jupiter, I'll let you know how it goes. I have to admit I'm very
nervous about the repair installation though.

I did the repair install, it was not easy. Some drivers for my corporate
vpn weren't found and I had to pull them from my laptop using a floppy, the
Intel app accelerator reported it wasn't certified for xp and caused a
memory dump. Fourth time lucky - I was able to install.

Still No Happiness!!! Norton reports the indexes are bad, not sure what to
do except clean it off and start over, or just live with it.
