Windows Messenger v5 is being beta tested as we speak. I heard rumour it was
due for final release sometime in June!
From what I've seen of it though, don't expect any miraculous new features,
unless you got a tablet pc, then you can use Messenger Ink - hoorah!
UPnP file transfer?? Who know's!?

Well I dont know about that, certainly doesn't seem that way if you read
certain articles:
http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=10951&category=main
With quotes like: "MSN Messenger is indeed going straight for the consumer
and leaving Windows Messenger far behind (in terms of functions)."
It seems like Microsoft are pushing us to use the MSN variety over the
Windows version! Basically its looking like if ya using Win XP ya gonna be
stuck with having to have both versions if ya want all the facilities to
work! Nice move MS... not!
As for there being a unified version 6, I dunno.. Ive not read or seen
anything about that, but I have seen mentioned elsewhere in this newsgroup
that v5 is due out sometime in June I think. I am currently using the v5
Beta, and to be quite honest (yes I know it's just a beta) there seems to be
nothing to get excited about in this version. And from what I have seen
discussed in this group UPnP file transfer still isnt going to be supported,
although the help files included with v5 would indicate that it does. I have
no means to really verify it.

Uh, UPnP file transfer already works in Windows Messenger 4.7.

I think you will find that UPnP is supported for everything BUT file
transfer in Windows Messenger 4.7. You need to have MSN Messenger 5
installed for UPnP file transfer to work.
But you don't have to take my word for it.. check out the multitude of posts
regarding file tranfers & Windows Messenger from behind a NAT firewall.
The thread titled: Sending files and uPnP is a good place to start :)

Actually, I just go by the fact that I have WM 4.7, haven't installed MSNM 5
and I've never had any problems sending files to others through my Linksys
router.

Well I guess you're just lucky then (like one in a few million), or you dont
have NAT enabled, or there's great gaping hole going through the firewall
(even then it's still doubtfull it would work).
Fact remains, UPnP File Transfer is NOT supported by Windows Messnger 4.7

Another possibility I just thought of is that your specific router includes
in built support for Windows Messenger, equating to something like an "allow
all" that you get with software firewalls.
Still it aint using UPnP to send files through the NAT firewall.
