Check the MS article: "How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry"

If you _really_ upgraded instead of doing a clean install, it will keep coming
back.

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If that does nothing, use a working PC to read these sites...

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q307545
describes a three-step process to extract a copy of the registry
from the System Restore SVI folder.

http://WWW.WEBTREE.CA/windowsxp/ (repair console/restore tutorial)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q314874
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm

After your system is restored, the ERUNT utility available here may
make it easier to fix the problem if it recurs...
http://HOME.T-ONLINE.DE/home/lars.hederer/erunt

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.

You can't fix XP using the 98 CD.

>Xp cd to start it says it will not work in Dos ??

I'm not sure what you are doing. You should change BIOS so that it boots
from the XP CD. Dos is not involved at all.

>need to start all over from format again ???

NO NO NO!!
Boot from the XP CD. Follow the instructions for a rebuild, as below.

Boot the WinXP CD, run a repair installation. You will need your Product
Key for this, these are the steps:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer
again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you
want to repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

(Thanks to Rick Rogers for that final paragraph.)

It surprised me, too, Hub. I did not think you'd give such silly advice. I
suspect a spammer or hacker has taken over your address and is using it. I
do not know how it is done, but I do know it happens. Unfortunately, I also
do not know how to do anything about it except change one's address with
the ISP. I hope one of the gurus will tell us both.

The real surprising thing is that when you had your haemorrhoids removed in
the 1990's, they threw the good bit away.

Are you here too? You must spend most of your time being moronic, but I
suppose I have to admit that you can read a website.

I guess it gives some tiny minds some pleasure to do what you do, like a
little boy s******ing in the corner of the classroom...

NO WAY! Problems with XP? It *MUST* be a bad disk. That's what winman says
ALL XP problems stem from.

How do I do that. I have the XP cd in the cd-rom bay but the computer
doesn't seem to recognize it before telling me I have a corrupt
registry file.

How do I change the BIOS settings, and what do I change them to?
