disc cleanup utility lockup

I've been able to use this utility easily in the past.
It's accessed through acc./system tools. The last 2 times
I've tried to use it result in it's locking up and sitting
on the desktop, sending the CPU usage to 100% and staying
there until task manager is used to close the program.
I've defragged the hard drive even though XP said I didn't
need to, I've gone back to a pre-problem restore point,
I've gotten rid of and cleaned up manually alot of stuff
that was not used, all to no avail. Help....

Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
