When i attempt to run disk clean up, it works for 40
minutes with just 4 little green rectangles (in other
words, it "hangs up")and when I close and try again, it
will not appear. Calling Dell, they have told me I
should run this in safe mode and to wait a week after
defragmenting. Still, it does not work like it did for
the first year of owning this computer. Disk clean up
still freezes. Going back to a restore point goofs up
lots of other things, but doesn't fix the freezing of
disk clean up. and leaves me with various other repairs
to recently installed programs. Do I need to reinstall
part of windows XP? I have tried that. I have had all
of my family move stuff out of our personal files in
preparation for some dramatic purging of our personal
files, but then they said just wait and try disk clean up
after defragmenting. i have. it doesn't work!

Dell are particularry stupid aren't they as it's a well known issue. Run attached file to remove the feature of disk cleanup that is hanging. MS knows about it but has no idea why.

you might also consider this routine - ie
"
you might try this as have given it to others to help -
ie
pls note that you can rectify it all by following this
suggested routine - as you need to understand what to
run first/why
ie
chkdsk - scans/fixes errors/flaws and cleans it up
defrag - reorganizes/optimizes disk operation
scandisk - no longer supported or included in windowsxp
now
1/
you can consider first using 'chkdsk/checkdisk/
a/
about chkdsk -
i/chkdsk - w/out 'parameters' - will run in 'scan mode'
ii/chkdsk /f - is run to fix/repair any errors/flaws for
FAT/FAT16/FAT32 file systems
iii/chkdsk /r - req'd for 'ntfs' -and req's the disk to
be locked for 'chkdsk' to run thus need for 'reboot' -
to lock disk before windows runs
b/
about running 'chkdsk in gui' -
in the 'win xp gui/graphic users interface/mode' -
go start/right click - my computer/open/
right click - local hd/properties/tools tab/
error checking section - check now/
check both options - dialog box/
reboot
note
chkdsk.exe - can be run as many times as necessary to
correct any 'errors/flaws' - and to remove them
c/
about running 'chkdsk in command prompt' -
chkdsk - can be run fr 'command prompt' as in dos - ie
go start/run - cmd.exe/produces 'command prompt window'/
enter 'chkdsk /f' - on 'command line - in window'/
if prompted on 'scheduling at next reboot' ans - yes/
reboot
2/
now you can do - 'defrag'
note
use same routine as in '1/b/' above - and again
go start/right click - my computer/open/
right click - local hd/properties/tools tab/
defragmentation section - defrag now/
3/
now -
to clean up any 'unneeded temp files' from/while surfing
the web
note
these can accumulate quickly - ie
chk your 'total files counts - before and after'
to see such accumulations
so
go start/control panel/network and internet connections/
internet options/general tab/
temporary internet files section/
go delete cookies/
go delete files/
note
'clear history' - clears the web addr links prev used
that show up in the 'drop down lists'/
see also 'content - tab'/personal information - section/
go - autocomplete... - to view/edit settings/
4/
and to clean up your 'desktop' - ie
right click - on 'screen background on desktop'/
properties/desktop - tab/
go - customize desktop/general - tab/
go - desktop cleanup - section/
go - select - clean desktop now/
go - select - run desktop cleanup wizard every 60 days/
now
you can pretty much let the desktop do it's own cleanup/
note
running items 1/ thru 3/ - should produce a clean disk
if run regularly - ie weekly/monthly - according to
your activity and preference
5/
my pref is set these to run - on boot/reboot/startup'
a/
nav - antivirus software on complete disk note chk 'files
totals before and after'
b/
'ad-aware' - chk'g for spyware/etc
and
take it fr there
"
all the best to you in your pursuits

God Bless
