I have a new gateway with a 40x/12x/48x CD-RW .

I want to purchase some new CD-RW discs for data storage. The Discs at the
store have different speeds listed on the package. Do I need to be
concerned with the speeds on the package or will my CD-RW automatically
adjust?

The computer is 2 months old

It is a Gateway 300 S with a combination DVD-CDRW Drive.

2.0 GHz 40 Gig Hard drive 256 Meg Ram.

Thanks for your help

For best results you should match or beat the speed rating on the CD-R or
CD-RW. You have a 12X rewriter so your rewritable disks should be at least
12X certified or faster. I have been able to use "slower" CD-R & CD-RW
successfully but I have also had failed writes unless I forced a slower
write speed.

I've also found that CD-R manufacturers list which Blank Manufacturers work
best with their products. I know this sounds corny but it solved my CD
burning issues at that moment.

First buy quality CDRs or CDRWs and match the speed of your burner. I would
also suggest getting good burner software. I personally use Easy CD
Creator, but Nero and NTI are also excellent.
I find that 99% of the CDs I use are CDRs. Music CDs cannot be made using
CDRWs. Unless the data being placed on the CD is going to be changed often,
it is more economical to use CDRs.

And how do you know which ones are quality and which ones are not?
