View Full Version : XP Home - will not resolve DNS names

t
April 4th 03, 11:40 AM
My computer is running Windows XP (I can also boot into Windows ME)

Everything was working fine, then my dad pointed out that he couldn't
send e-mails or browse the web (this was within 20 minutes of me logging
off after having e-mailed and browsed without a problem). Trying to
view anything on the web resulted in a "DNS failed to resolve.... "
type message.

I checked all the settings on my internet connection - it was set
to obtain IP address automatically, automatically allocate DNS server.. etc.
It looks just the same as the way it's setup on Windows ME (which is working
fine).

I've been browsing the web for a solution. Tried reinstalling Windows XP and
using the 'repair an existing installation' option but that hasn't solved
the problem. I tried renaming wsock32.dll and re-installing it as that was
suggested in one of the newsgroup discussions.

I have made sure that my connection has firewall disabled, just while I'm
trying to fix the problem, and I'm not running ZoneAlarm (as I found this
blocked access in the past).

If I go to an MSDOS prompt I can ping using IP addresses o.k. but I can't
ping by name (e.g. www.microsoft.com just gives errors saying no DNS server
is available)

Please can anyone suggest a solution.

Thanks

Trevor

Hi, Mark

Thanks for your advice. I downloaded the patch successfully but
it needs to already have SP1 and patch Q810847. I can't find a way
of downloading the complete Internet Explorer SP1 package, the
download is just a setup program which then needs to connect to
the internet to complete and it can't connect because of the problem
that I'm having.

Any other ideas would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Well, I found out that XP Service pack 1 includes Internet Explorer SP1
and so, I'm hoping XP SP1A includes it, too.

The download for the complete (network) edition is available at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/network.as
p
(it is over 100Mb so would be hopeless without cable/dsl)
