Somehow I have both Windows Messenger and MSN messenger
installed...and with either one, I cannot shut it down
from the system tray. The most I can do is sign-off.
When I try to shut it down, I get the following message....
"There are other applications currently using features
provided by Windows Messenger. You must close these other
applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. The
applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN
Explorer, and Internet Explorer."
I close the appropriate applications, but the icon still
remains in the system tray.
Can someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks

Greetings,
Firstly, do you have do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant
messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and
display this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton
Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton
Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and
click OK.
Next, if you just want one Messenger icon, you need to decide which Messenger client you want
to use -- XP can run both Windows Messenger 4.7 and MSN Messenger 5 at the same time, hence
why you have two icons. If you just want to use Windows Messenger, you can uninstall MSN
Messenger 5 by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, click MSN Messenger 5
and then click Remove. Otherwise, if you to use MSN Messenger 5, you need to keep Windows
Messenger installed (but not running) because if you do remove it, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
4.7, by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program
when Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though.
As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 5 to work
properly.

Messenger 5.0.
