Can anyone explain the difference between NetMeeting and
Windows Messenger. I just ran onto someone who raves
about NetMeetings as a way he and I can trade information
and educate one another on certain programs. He said he
had been conversing with a person and they could view
each each others computer. I don't know if that was with
some type of video hook up or something more direct.
There is a feature called whiteboard by which one person
can draw a picture that can be seen by the other person.
Maybe that is it.
I take it that NetMeeting is being phased out. But it is
still available on Windows XP I think.

Dave, don't know where you have been relative to computers, but NetMeeting
has been around for almost 10 years. If you have XP then do this: Go to
Start--Run--and type in Conf and push the enter key and it will install.

No, I haven't not been that involved with the
communications side of Microsoft, but in trying to find
out more about NetMeeting by going to current books and
XP bibles at Barnes and Noble, I find that going to the
index of the 70% of the books there is no mention of
NetMeeting. One book did say that there was a deliberate
attempt by MS to shift to Windows Messenger.
My question though was what is the difference? And I was
really wondering if one can take a look at the actions of
another on their computer by any other means than a video
cam sitting right behind the operator.
Just curious even though a little late in the game.

Your info is correct, you can have a video/audio/whiteboard/or a Desktop
sharing with NetMeeting. You can see yourself along with the other party at
the same time. If you have XP just click the Start button then the Run and
type in Conf and push the enter key and it will load. Also, go to
www.meetingbywire.com and you will find all the information you will need to
use NetMeeting. No need to go to Barnes and Noble, this site will provide
much more info and you will ever find at the book store. It is written by
Brian Sullivan a NetMeeting MVP.

Hi Joel,
I think 10 years is a little pushing it -- more like 6-7 years (1.0 got released in 1996 I
believe -- Brian may correct me *grin*).

You are right 10 could be pushing. I was there when it first came out,
don't remember it being a "release", just something that was put up somehow.
It was really bad, but I though it was really great. I could talk to
someone way off somewhere. I have stayed with it ever since its inception
and I still think it is one of the best communication methods to date. I
don't remember Brian being in the picture until later, there was Robert
Scoble (Robert does not check in very often now days) Joe Rotello was also
around, still is, but does not check into the NetMeeting Newsgroups anymore,
and some others. There was some fellow in Phoenix, but he has not been
heard from in a very long time. Bryan Chee, a Microsoft employee checked
into the newsgroup on occassion back then, but of course no more. All has
falled no Brian Sullivan now days.

Thanks, Joel. That web site meetingbywire.com is great.
Just saved me $29.95 for a book. I have downloaded
NetMeeting to my desktop and am ready to roll.
