Disk Cleanup is stuck!

I run disk cleanup.....It get to where it's scanning
compress old files. I have left it running for over a
hour, and it's stays scanning for the old files. Also it
doesn't stop after I click cancel. I have to end the
process myself. I really would be thankful for any help.
