View Full Version : contact can hear me, but I can not hear contact

Frustrating problem...

No firewall, Win XP firewall is disabled. Contact can
hear me, but I can not hear contact. Microphone tests
fine on contacts machine, and contact's microphone "bars"
move as he is speaking. Sound recorder works fine on his
machine, and Roger Wilco works fine on his machine.

What do you need to know, I will get for you? I only ask
for a bit of help ;-) and a few ideas if you have them.

Motherboard is a Giga-byte GA-8K1100, on board Realtek
audio with current drivers dated 5/8/2003 if my memory is
correct.

Thanks,
Jason Vodnansky

Greetings Jason,

Just a bit of clarification here -- which "bars" are you referring to that are moving when
he's speaking -- if it's the bar in your client ("Speakers") that shows he's speaking, then
you may just have something muted in your sound card (click Start, then Run, enter "sndvol32"
and click OK to check).

However, if it's just the test that's showing the moving bar, or his in his client
("Microphone"), then my question to you would be if either you or your contact are using a
router? If so, you (or him) may just need to reset your UPnP forwardings -- to do so, click
Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the
"Internet Gateway" (should be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties.
Choose the Settings button, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete'
to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart
Messenger and try a voice/video conversation again.

Jonathan,

Thanks for the response...

The bars are HIS microphone bars in the contact messenger window (I hope
that makes sense). Another way of explaining it is that in the messenger
window with my name where he "starts talking", those microphone bars.

My speaker bars are not moving.

Another way yet is that, All things point to the fact that his voice is
getting into messeger, but not getting from messenger to the internet.

He can hear me fine. I also manged to verify (in my mind) the problem
exists at his end, since I am able to have voice conversations with other
people.

He is not behind a router of any type, nor behind a firewall (including the
Win XP internal firewall).

I think I have checked each one now in your response now, with same issue.
I see lots of this type of issue in the newsgroup and none of the solution
seem to have worked so far.

Next idea ;-)

Jason

Hi Jason,

I'm not quite sure what else the issue could be -- have you tried any other apps that are
capable of voice conversations (netmeeting, yahoo messenger, etc.)?

I am having the same exact problem...My friend just
bought a new PC and his microphone seems to work fine on
his end (in sound recorder and even the volume bars in
Messenger), but when we connect, he can hear me, but I
can't hear him. We can do application sharing and I can
see on his desk top when we are trying to have a voice
conversation that his microphone bars are elevating, but
no sound is reaching my end. All other functions are
working, I asked him to get a webcam, so we could see if
he was able to send video, I will try this tonight. Even
when he has no camera, when I start a video conference,
and application sharing together, I can see myself on his
screen, he can hear me, his microphone bars move, but I
can't hear him. I have set this up and connected with 5
other people and they all work fine.

Any Advice?

Could his ISP be blocking transmission from him???
