This is driving me nuts. I had messenger 4.7 installed and thought I should
upgrade. I choose version 5 for my platform (XP) and install thinking it
will upgrade. NO, it adds a second messenger. So now I have both versions
running.
So now here's the deal, I like the look and all of the newer version, but
the remote assistance just will not work period. And I do have it checked to
allow remote assistance on this computer. As soon as I click "ask for remote
assistance" to test it, I get a message that says the following message
could not be delivered to all recipients. To insure that remote assistance
will work properly, upgrade to the latest version. (already done!) Same
things occurs when someone request remote assistance from me.
Ok so now I log out on 5 and back in 4.7 and remote assistance works.
To fix the problem of 2 messengers running I used this run command to remove
all of messenger:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
OK so now I reinstall the latest version and all seems ok. Only one
messenger but now back to square one. Remote assistance no longer works. So
I reinstall 4.7 and now have both messengers installed again and now remote
assistance works again.
This is really frustrating. So since I don't use remote assistance that much
I go in to the options of 4.7 and uncheck the automatic log in and load on
windows start up. This way I will only have the new messenger load on start
up but guess what??? when you launch OE it starts messenger 4.7. So now I
have both programs loaded and running again! ARGHHHHHH! Why doesn't MS just
make one @#%#^&^%# program!
Can anyone help here?
Thanks -=Motorhed=--

What's up? No MVP'S can answer this? I know I am not the only person
experiencing this. I have two friends at work that have reported the same
thing. (primarily about two different versions of messenger installed)
Is that what Microsoft intended? To have them install as separate programs
rather then upgrade the same program?

Hi motorhead
If you follow these steps curtsey of Jonathan Kay MVP (hope you don't mind
Jonathan)
You can just disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by opening it up, click Tools,
Options,
Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when Windows starts'. This
won't stop it
from being loaded by some other application though. As well, you can disable
it further by
going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows
Components on the
left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list and click Next >.
Note: this is only
available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't,
visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows Messenger,
but it will let it
stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 5 to work properly.
As well, to stop it from loading with Outlook Express, download and run this
..reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
Then, if you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed, Norton added a new
"instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can automatically load
Windows Messenger.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon
in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
Also see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=330117 for more information on Windows
Messenger 4.7 and MSN
Messenger 5.0.
