Looking for help with inaccessible file in Windows XP. I
am the PC owner (the dad) and initially creaated a user
account called "daddy" and named a folder in that
account "daddy" when I bought the PC. I transferred many
important files from my old PC to this file. A month or
so ago I changed my user account and then created a new
account. I then removed that "daddy" account from the
account listing in XP and suddenly two weeks ago I am
unable to access the file through window explorer. The
message says "daddy in not accessible, access is denied".

Dells wants $150 to help me. Can anybody help me?

Thanks.

Boyd

Greetings Boyd,

The permissions may just be set incorrectly. Firstly, click the Tools menu in any Explorer
window (that is, looking at your hard drive, not Internet Explorer), click Folder Options,
View tab, scroll down to the bottom under Advanced settings, verify that 'Use simple file
sharing' is unchecked, and click OK. Next, go to the "daddy" folder/file, right click the
folder/File, and click Properties. Then click the Security tab (if you get any warning
messages, simply press OK). Click the Advanced tab, then Owner tab, choose your account as
the Owner, if this is a folder, be sure to turn on 'Replace owner on subcontains and objects'
and then click OK. Then click the Advanced button again, click the 'Inherit from parent the
permission entries ...' if not already selected, and if this is a folder, be sure to turn on
'Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries..' and click OK. Then click OK
again and try to access the file.

Thank you Jonathan,

I could not get past step one. I went into windows
explorer and into the tools, fo,der options, view tab,
advanced settings as you suggested and I did not see a
box titled "use simple file sharing" so I coul uncheck
it. Am I doing some thing wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Boyd
