View Full Version : Windows Messenger 5.0

I downloaded the beta version of Windows Messenger 5.0 (build 149) to
replace an earlier beta version that I had installed.
The fact of the matter is, I uninstalled version 5.0, but Windows still
thinks it's installed, so all I can do is install 4.7. When I run the setup
for Windows Messenger 5.0, I can only repair the current installation (which
doesn't exist) which itself leads to an error!
Is there a registry key or something that Windows Messenger 5.0 beta setup
creates to make Windows think it's installed? I want to remove version 5.0
completely so I can start again. I tried the "rundll32
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"
command, but no luck.
TIA

Greetings Nona,
You might need to use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to fix this.
First, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/office2000pro/util20/1/NT4/EN-US/msicuu.exe
Run and install the program after you've downloaded it. After the setup is complete, click
Start, then Programs (All Programs if you're using XP), then Windows Install Clean Up.
Click Windows Messenger 5.0 and then click 'Remove'. Click 'OK' to the warning message that
comes up.
After you've done this, you should be able to run Windows Messenger 5 setup again.
