I have been getting popup spam that says it is messenger
related. I have read online about how Microsoft has
incorporated this function into xp and messenger. How
the hell do you turn it off, I keep getting porn popping
up and it is getting really annoying. I've tried
different blockers but nothin works, does microsoft think
this is smart, nothing like porn popping up at work or
around kids. Anyone know something to stop this or turn
the function off that would be great. thanks.

For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904&
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.
This will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.
Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

total bull****...heres the real solution
Click Start, and then Run. Type services.msc into the box and click OK.
Scroll down to Messenger, select it by right-clicking it and then choose
Properties. Under subcategory startup type, click on arrow then choose
Disabled, then choose the Stop button. After the service is stopped, click
OK. Nothing in Windows or any real third-party applications should be
affected by this.

What a major annoyance! How in the heck do I get rid of
all these popups? I have NO Messenger listed at all in
my control panel, so I can't remove it from there.
Just got another popup as I type this! Aaargh!
