View Full Version : Using voice behind a firewall
Eric
May 15th 03, 04:58 PM
I want to be able to use voice to communicate between 2
computers in different rooms in my house. They are both
behind a Linksys router/firewall. I've tried doing what MS
suggested - enabling UPnP, and it still doesn't work. It
looks like it should, but no voice on either end.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm using Messenger 4.7
and Windows XP Pro on both computers. Y! Messenger's voice
doesn't work behind a firewall, either, but they don't
claim it will.
Thanks,
Eric

Greetings Eric,
Since both are behind the router, UPnP isn't required. Are you actually able to establish
the connection, just not hearing anything, or isn't it even able to establish a connection?
You also might want to try turning off the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (on both
PCs)-- click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network
and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet
Connection Firewall is unchecked.
Yahoo's voice features should and do actually work through a firewall, if they can't make a
direct connection, it goes through the Yahoo server (although the quality is far from good).

Thanks for answering, Jonathan.
Yes, I can make a connection with Messenger, and I tell it
to start talking, but when the other person accepts,
nothing happens. I can still send and receive text. I
haven't tried the other features.
XP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled on both
computers, too.
Any ideas?
BTW, according to Y!'s help, voice won't work from behind a
firewall. Doesn't it have to go out to the server, then
back to the other computer? It looks like it'll work, but
when you try to use voice, it gives an error that it lost
connection with the voice server and will try to reconnect.
It does, but when you try again, the same error comes up.
Do you know how to make that work?
Maybe there's some setting on my Linksys router that's
preventing these from working?
Thanks again for any help,
Eric

Start->Run type "dxdiag"
to determine your DirectX version

Hi Eric,
It could be your Linksys router, the only real thing that could be conflicting is if built-in
Messenger support in the router has kicking in, therefore sending the wrong IP to the other
computer -- with UPnP on however, this shouldn't be occurring.
Since Yahoo is trying the server method (which isn't very reliable to answer that question)
and not making a direct connection (as it should) it does sound like something is blocked
between the two PCs. Have you installed ZoneAlarm or anything other firewall software like
that in the past (and it's just disabled) -- if so, try actually uninstalling it and see if
that makes any difference.
