View Full Version : Messenger Service - A Question

My system often hangs up during close down due to the "message app"
not responding. I assume this is the Messenger in the Services area,
not Windows Messenger, which I do not use.

If I disable this, will I also lose Auto-Notification of Updates, and
Error Reporting to MS?

Thanks

Greetings,

I don't believe the "Message App" is the Messenger Service (in the Services area), but to
answer your question, no, this has no effect on error reporting, automatic updates, etc.

First, thanks for the incredibly swift response. I had barely posted
the request, went for a drink of water, came back, and downloaded
headers, and there it was! That's what I call service.

Second, If it isn't the Messenger Service, what could it be? The
dialog that appears only identifies it as "message app", and asks if I
want to return to windows and let it complete its task, or stop it
now, and warns I will lose data if I do. Returning to windows does not
seem to make a difference. I may wait several minutes, attempt to
close down, and the same thing occurs about half the time.

I do not use any instant messenger. I cannot figure out what else this
would be. Any suggestions for determining what it is?

Thanks again

Hi,

What you might try is going into the Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Del, or right click on the
Taskbar and choose Task Manager), click the Processes tab, and under programs running by you
(the "User Name" column), try shutting down some applications (End Process option) to see if
you can isolate exactly what it is.

For reference, Messenger is either msmsgs.exe (for Windows Messenger) or msnmsgr.exe (for MSN
Messenger 5).
