I have a different but similar problem after updating
q817287. My system is a 6 months old XP Home Edition.
After downloading this critical update, my apps take
longer to open and occasionaly hang. I can't find any
reference to q817287 on Microsoft's site anywhere. It
looks like there is no uninstall for this update. I will
probably repair the XP installation from the CD and start
from there all over again.
Sorry I can't help much, but at least there are other
people having the same problem and maybe someone from
Microsoft will respond.

Had the problem with 811493.

Computer would restart and stall on opening screen.
As it did not load I could not use add/remove programs in control panel.

Fortunately I had just made a Drive Image - Image file and just reloaded
that image.

To test the problem I again tried to load 811493 with the same result.
