I'm running XP Home Edition and my system was running
fine until I downloaded this recent "critical update".
Now my system boots up slowly, and my apps all open
slowly almost to the point of hanging! I don't see it
listed in the add/remove program feature. How do I get
rid of this "update of death" and restore my system to
its original performance?????????

I would try restoring the system with "System Restore"or maybe uninstall the
update in "Add/Remove Programs." in Control Panel.

Update 811493 is reportedly causing a slowdown also and it is removable.

Hi
Very unlikely that Q817287 has caused this. I'm pretty sure that it is Q811493
that has done this to your computer, it is known do it (it was released approx.
at the same time as Q817287). Q811493 can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
in the Control Panel.
