I am having a problem with the print spooler service not starting in XP
home. As a result the 3 printers that I have been using no longer appear in
the printers section of printers and fax. I tried reinstalling the printers
but when I click on add a printer I get an error "Operation could not be
completed" This happens 1/2 second after I click on add a new printer.
I traced the problem to the print spooler not starting. I have tried
starting it manually and it errors out. "Could not start print spooler
service on Local Computer. Error 1059: Circular service dependency was
specified" I have tried numerous reboots, restore points and removing
printers as per MSKB 324757. Still I have no luck.
I did notice that when I look at the print spooler in the services tab of
MSCONFIG, it is listed as unknown in the manufacturers column. I checked on
other computers and they list print spooler as a MS product.
MY QUESTION: Is there a way to remove this Unknown print spooler and replace
it with what i think would be the correct one from Microsoft. I am hoping
this is possible with out having to reformat and reinstall XP!

Hi Laserbiz,
You can create a print spool folder anywhere on your hard drive.
You also have to activate it.
Log on as Administrator,
click Start, and click My Computer,
Open the drive or folder in which you want to store the spool folder.
Under File and Folder Tasks, click Make a new Folder.
In the Name box, type the name you want. ( spool folder)
Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
On the File menu, click Server Properties,
Click the Advanced tab,
In the Spool Folder box, type the complete path to the new folder you
created.
Click Apply.
The following message appears:
The changes to the spool folder will occur immediately and any currently
active documents will not print. It is recommended to allow all documents to
complete printing, before changing the spool folder. Are you sure you want
to change the spool folder?
Ensure all documents have completed printing, and then click Yes.
Click OK, and then close the Printers and Faxes folder.
Good Luck,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,
thanks for your prompt response! I am a liitle confused... The problem I am
having has to do with the service spoolsv.exe not being able to start
either automatically or manually. I think I may need a new or different
version of Spoolsv.exe as the one that presently shows up is not listed as
coming from Microsoft. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again!!
