View Full Version : Msn Messenger 5.0 / Windows Messenger 4.7 Linksys wrt54g

Hello,
I just bought yesterday a Linksys router WRT54G! I
encounter some problem with Windows Messenger 4.7. I
can't send/receive file and start talking.
Here is my settings:
-Windows XP Pro SP1
-Windows Messenger 4.7
-WRT54G with firmware 1.02.1 (latest)
-WPC54G with fixed IP address
-I have installed Internet Gateway Device Discovery and
Control Client / Universal plug and play (it start
automatically in services)
For Linksys this router is compliant with uPNP (enabled
by default)! What I have done on the router is to open
all ports (0-65535) for TCP and UDP and forward it to my
fixed IP address. These settings didn't work. After that,
I have put my IP address on the DMZ with no results!
I have downloaded and installed MSN Messenger 5.0, with
this version I can send/receive files, remote
assistance,... but conversation still doesn't work!
Could you help me with this problem?
Thanks in advance

Greetings Salim,
I've heard mixed results with the WRT54G's UPnP support -- although I don't have a definite
answer for you yet, I'm curious, if you go into Network Connections (Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, Network Connections), does an "Internet Gateway" (or similar)
show up? If not, then UPnP is not active.
As well, make sure that the Internet Connection Firewall isn't active on your connection --
click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet
Connection Firewall is unchecked.
Finally, were you able to use all of these before you installed the router?

Hello Jonathan,
I have succedeed to make voice conversation with Msn
Messenger 5.0 as well with Windows Messenger! Here is
what I have done:
1. On the router, advanced tab --> port forwarding page
(with the last firmware 1.02.1), I have forwarded the
following ports to my fixed IP (1863 TCP; 5060 TCP ; 1503
TCP ; 6890-6902 TCP; 3389 TCP)
2. The last firmware for the Linksys WRT54G support by
default uPnP! So there is no way to enable it or disabled
3. On the router, security page, I have disabled the
Block Wan Request
4. On Windows XP, I have installed Internet Gateway
Device and Control client, and Universal Plug and Play! I
have also checked in Services that these services will
start automatically!
5. Restart the PC
6. An Internet Connection (Internet Gateway)appears in
Network Connection! When you start an voice conversation,
and then go to the properties of this gateway, you will
see the UDP port that are opened automatically by the
router
I am very glad that it works now fine! I think this post
will help people with this kind of problem with Linksys
WRT54G router

Hi Salim,
Thanks very much -- it does appear that UPnP is functioning normally.
Glad to hear you were able to get everything working =).

Hi Art,
Installing the Universal Plug and Play service in XP isn't required for any features in
Messenger to work with a router.
As for the Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client (also not required to use
Messenger's features with a router), it should be installed by default. You can check the
status of it, by going to Start, Run, type "services.msc", click OK, and then in the
Services, check the status of "SSDP Discovery Service".

Under SSDP Discovery Service, the status is listed as "Started", and startup
type is listed as "Manual", and Log on as is listed as "Local Service"
I haven't changed any settings since doing a fresh install of Windows SP-1,
and I am also using the same WRT54G router and have not been able to
successfully perform voice chat on Messenger 5.0
Last time I tried, I could hear the other side, but they could not hear me.
Btw, I do have the most recent firmware for my router, and Internet
Connection Firewall is not enabled.
Should I enable DMZ, instead of doing port forwarding to open up all
ports... someone was suggesting that, or is that not neccessary? ANyone
with the same router, same Messenger 5.0 and some OS version that has gotten
Voice chat to work? Funny thing is video transmission on both ends are
fine, but not chat.
Any suggestions?

You can check the

then in the

Hi Art,
Have you tried using Windows Messenger 4.x instead of MSN Messenger 5?
