windows messenger/msn messenger HELP!!!

Can someone help me, I deleted msn messenger because I
was getting both msn and windows messengers popping up at
the same time, now my son's msn contact list is gone.
Ithought it would have transfered them over to windows
messenger but it didn't, so now do I have to reinstall
msn messenger so he can have his own messenger or can he
share windows messenger with me through his hotmail
account.
Please help
