View Full Version : Windows boot hangs...

Hello everyone,

Today I was trying to setup a file share across a network
between 2 computers both running XP Home edition which
doesn't allow you to modify who can access the shared
folders on an individual or group bases (either everyone
can read, or everyone can write...). To try and fix it I
went into safe mode which allowed me to modify the folder
share options as if I was running the Professional
version (i.e. I got the file permissions and security
windows up). I messed around a bit, with no luck so I
rebooted and found my system hanging on that nice
graphical startup screen. I have a feeling I might have
altered the ACL permissions for some important system
files. It still boots up into safe mode however and I
tried using system restore to roll back a day and it
booted sucessfully but when I rebooted later it hung
again!
Anyone got any ideas whats going on? Have I messed up
some important ACL permissions somewhere?
If so how can I restore the defaults?
Heres another weird thing I found. If I go into restore
console mode from the CD and run FIXMBR and FIXBOOT the
system boots normal but then fails the next time you
reboot it!!!
Would appreciate ANY help you might be able to give me!

Cheers,

James.

Mark,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply!
I checked out the web page but it refers to the programme
secedit which appears to be only for Windows XP
Professional and I am using the Home edition!!!
Any further ideas? Your wizdom would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks,

James.

I would try a repair, and if no help, I would run the fastwiz and install
windows to a new folder

File & Settings Transfer Wizard:
http://aumha.org/a/fast.htm

Repair:
Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

you may need re-download all updates.
