I am on a cable modem and i use 2 or more "pop up
stopper" programs at any one time. What is happening is
that in the middle of my work or in the middle of my games
(some of which i pay to play online) will
sudenly "minimize" and a message from the messenger
service will display. Some even wanting me to go to a web
site to learn how to stop this very type of pop up.This
is spam and it would seem that it is exploiting some sort
of "hole" in windows xp. i refuse to pay 30 or 40 dollars
for the privlige of using software that i paid dearly to
aquire a licinse to use. I think i have a right to use my
own machine without this intrusion. There has to be a way
to turn this off and plug the hole. If anybody knows how
please let me know at .

To get rid of these pop ups, you need to disable the Messenger
Service. Click Start, then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK.
Scroll down to "Messenger", select it, right-click and then choose
Properties. Hit the Stop button, then change Startup type to
Disabled, and hit OK..
Another way to rid yourself of Messenger Service spam would be to put
yourself behind a NAT router.

For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904&
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.
This will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.
Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

For internet pop-ups, try one of these:
