messenger not connecting to server/password

Hello, I had a problem which occurred after installing an
Ms update called "windows update v4". i seemed to affect
both Media player and windows messenger "connection to a
server". I fixed it by restoring prior to the update
using accesories, system restore and selecting a date
prior to the update. I wont be installing the update
until someone is able to tell me what went wrong or
provides a workaround. Can anyone help with that?

The latest version of WindowsUpdate really shouldn't have any effect on anything else -- I'm
not quite sure what you're seeing. Can you be more specific about what features in Media
Player and Windows Messenger are being effected (judging by your subject line, Messenger
refused to sign in).
