Got a new pc (w\o hard drive) & installed the hard drive from my
previous pc into it. I'm dual booting to '98se & XP Pro.

I directed the driver search to the winxp folder I installed XP from
for the '98se detection\change phase & it picked up almost all the
drivers, but when trying to boot to XP it gave a hard drive error &
didn't even get to the plug n play new driver search phase like '98
did.

What do I do, rerun XP setup & choose "repair", or what?
Exact steps, please.

TIA!
Frank

Ps: I'm up & running fine in '98se boot, just need the XP info please.

Pss: Please cc response to my email, as well.

Hi Frank,

Do a repair installation. Follow these steps to do a repair install which
should preserve your data, settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin. If you lose the Win98 system option after this
repair, see this site on recreating it:
