View Full Version : CD disk drawer keeps opening

David Theobald

Running XP home for the last 16 months - no problems. All of a sudden the
empty CD disk drawer has started opening at random times. Can not do it at
all for an hour or so but when it gets started its in & out like a yo-yo.
Everything else on the system appears fine, no new hardware or software
recently. What is going on?
Cheers

Just ran a check of my XP firewall and the website could open and close my
CD-RW and DVD drives, so maybe it is some virus etc.

David;
There are several different answers to that question.
The exact version of installed OS and exact version you are changing
to determine the specific fix.

If the situation below does not apply, repost back with the specifics
so a correct answer can be given.
Does it fit this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904
If it does, you most likely have a pirated Windows XP Pro.
If it is pirated, you need to contact the seller and/or Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/default.asp
One of the features of Service Pack 1 is to detect pirated copies of
windows XP.
Also you have 3 options to become legal:
1. Go back to the previous OS:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303661
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314052
This may or may not work depending on the installation options used.
2. Perform a Clean Install with the OS of your choice destroying ALL
data.
3. Purchase Windows XP Pro (Home will not work) and perform a Repair
Installation using the new valid key:

David;
You could have a virus or some other malware on the computer.
This should be more appropriate:
Run an updated virus scan.
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

Otherwise you could try System Restore.

Greetings --

Contact the PC's manufacturer for a new CD drive. If your PC is
out of warranty, go to your local computer shop and purchase a new CD
drive.

I had all that 'cleaning gear' but hadn't bothered trying it. Now have done
so and the drawer has stayed closed for five hours!. Adaware found quite
abit of stuff that is now gone.
Thanks for the advice

Glad to hear it David.
Hopefully it is now fixed.

If problem returns, look for some type of hardware issue as Bruce
suggests.

In any case, sounds like you got rid of a bunch of garbage.

I did read once, in a windows98 group, that a manufacturer supplied what
was effectively a firmware 'BIOS' upgrade to a CD drive for this
drawer-opening problem, but it was a long time ago...
