I have both MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger installed
on my computer. I permit them to know my password so I can
log into MSN Messenger easily. The problem is that at
random times Windows Messenger will log me in.

I have tried deactivating the option that allows Windows
Messenger to log me in automaticly when I am connected to
the internet. Unfortunatley, this option does not remain
deactivated when I log off of Windows Messenger.

Since I am connected to the internet through Shaw, my
computer is always online so Windows Messenger logs me on
every 10 to 30 mintues. I have tried removing Windows
Messenger from my icon tray and that doesn't help.

The only way to prevent it is to log off of Windows. The
helps when I am away from the computer but is of no help
when I am playing games, working or chatting on MSN
Messenger.

I want to keep use of Windows Messenger and let MSN
Messenger remember my password. I tried sending an email
to Microsoft help, but I can't find anywhere to send one.
My only optins where to come here or pay them so I can
tell them my problem.

I hope someone can tell me what to do, perhaps there is a
line of code in some obscure file, or someone can contact
Microsoft and tell them the problem.

Greetings Roy,

There is no option in Windows Messenger to not automatically connect you to the internet
(when the Passport is saved) -- this is a MSN Messenger 5 feature exclusively.

Firstly, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Windows Messenger and
keep it signing on even though it appears not to be running. To stop it, open Norton
Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by
the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then
uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

After this, you can just stop Windows Messenger from loading at bootup time (open the main
Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Preferences, then uncheck "Run this program when
Windows starts" and click OK. You can then start Windows Messenger whenever you want to use
it.

Greetings Jonathan Kay,

I have Norton Antivirus 2002 and Norton Internet Security
2002. I do not see a section involving messenger so that
must be a new thing for 2003.

If you know anything else that might cause this I would
appreciate the help.

Thanks for replying to my original message.

Hi Roy,

It is a new feature in 2003, yes.

If you go to the task manager (hit Ctrl-Alt-Del or right-click on an unused part of the
taskbar and choose Task Manager), then choose the Processes tab, is 'msmsgs.exe' running?

Hi Jonathan Kay,

Yes, 'msmsgs.exe' is running.

Hi Roy,

Then Windows Messenger (msmsgs.exe) is being loaded by something -- do you happen to use
Outlook Express? If so, download and run this .reg file to Messenger loading with OE:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

I can't think of anything off hand that will load Windows Messenger -- if you do see it in
the Task Manager, just simply end the msmsgs.exe process (shouldn't be any ill effects by
doing so).
