When I go into microsoft word and activate the open file
button the extensive list of files appear, but I do not
have a perpendicular scroll bar. How can I get it back?
I do have a horizontal scroll bar. Can anyone help please.

The horizontal scrollbar should show you every file in the selected folder.
If there is anything that does not fit on the screen, the vertical scrollbar
should automatically appear as it does in all Windows applications. There is
a scrollbar setting in Tools/Options/View to enable vertical and horizontal
scrollbars, but I'm not sure that this setting applies to the File/Open
dialog box.

The horizontal scroll bar is all you will have in the File | Open box.
