In reinstalled windows because of a problem with a worm
and now i have no icons on my desktop except for the
recycle bin and the whole system seems alot more basic.
i'm not sure if it is possible to revert out of this
state or if I'll need to completely reinstall XP but
either way I need to get this out of the way,
also, although the system is re-installed all of my old
files are still on the drive..I really need them to be
formatted so I can be sure of eliminating the worm.
anyone,
PLEASE
thank you.

Hi Trevor,
Sounds like you did an over the top install, not a repair or clean install.
As long as you are not concerned with saving any existing files, boot the
CD, chose a new installation and format as part of it (yes, you get to do it
again). Or, you can keep the existing installation and run a full system
scan with an updated AV program.
As you did not mention what worm it was, I would suggest you still scan the
boot sector in any case, as formatting does not get rid of a bug housed
here.

Right click the Desktop, select Properties, Desktop, Customize Desktop. You
can enable the other "normal" icons there, but as Rick said, it sounds as if
you did a "new" install, rather than a repair.
